Here are Heartfelt messages from people on social media:

My friend Jim Pagels passed away this weekend.
Jim was a supremely interesting and kind man and a fun and supportive friend.

He had a broad set of interests: He loved tennis and was a fun sparring partner with a nasty forehand. He was an eager and gracious party host and really loved board game nights. And the man was just unmatched at explaining the rules of board games to newbies.

He was quirky and funny, and just generally a great person to have a conversation with. He was interested and open-minded and rarely judgemental, in a way that is unusual to find. I was always impressed with the way he was able to connect with and bring together a broad range of people. Jim made socializing easier for everyone else: When he entered a room, the room became livelier and more talkative.

Jim was extremely bright and interested in policy, and I loved talking policy and economics with him. As anyone who ever had a conversation about politics with Jim knows, he was deeply passionate about urbanism and urban policy, and his enthusiasm about the topic was contagious. He cared a lot about housing affordability and supply, ensuring that as many people as possible could reap the benefits of living in cities, and he hated the deep unfairness of restrictive housing policies.

He dreamt of vibrant, dense, and livable cities, where people from all over the world could come and find opportunity. He also loved biking, and cared a lot about transportation policies, and designing cities where people could safely get around without owning a car. We complained often about how DC was a cruel and unsafe place for urban bikers: It is a morbid irony that he was killed by a car while biking in DC. I hope one day we can get the cities that he dreamed of.

As an economics PhD student at Michigan, he was planning to work on research topics in urban economics, addressing these types of policy issues. The world will be worse off without his contributions.

I last saw Jim in Ann Arbor while road-tripping back to California from D.C. We went tubing along the river, ate a nice meal outdoors (awkwardly pictured), and played tennis. It was a really sweet day. I’ll miss him.

Life is short and tomorrow is never promised. Jim you were way to young and had such a bright future. R.I.P my sweet nephew Jim pagels.
